PROGRAMS

At MSK, our classrooms are multi-aged following the Montessori philosophy whereby the older children learn by helping the younger children and the younger children admire and learn to accomplish what the older children are working on.
Both the Casa and Elementary Classrooms at MSK follow a three year multi-age cycle. The Casa program houses children from 2½ to 6 years of age and the lower elementary classroom houses children 6 to 9 years of age. Respectfully, Upper Elementary will house children aged 9 to 12 years, thus grades or level 4, 5 and 6. The benefits to this method of teaching are endless. Primarily, the greatest benefit lies in the children remaining in the same classroom, ideally with the same teachers, and some of the same children for a three-year cycle.

Specialty Subjects

Each specialty subject has been designed to offer above and beyond Ministry expectations. Instructors are qualified and experienced in each specialty program.

CASA Program

The first plane of development. For children 2.5 to 6 years of age. On the Importance of early education the majority of educators and psychologists today concur with our founder and Matriarch Dr. Maria Montessori, who believed that the single most influential and important period in the development of a person’s intelligence, occurs between birth and age six.

Maria Montessori suggested that from birth to age six is known as the “absorbent years.” Children at this time are compared to as being like sponges whereby they absorb everything exposed to them.

Lower Elementary

The second plane of development. For children 6 to 9 years of age. “The child is also a worker and a producer. Although he cannot share in the work of adults, he has his own difficult and important task to perform, that of producing a man.” (Maria Montessori).

Respect, responsibility and resourcefulness are the three areas that children take from the casa program into the elementary program and further build on and refine. Children are also questioning and wondering in the why and the how. The children carry with them the growth from casa in each of the five areas, and continue to build and enhance their knowledge to unlimited levels.

Upper ElemEntary

The third plane of development. For children 9 to 12 years of age. Some regard Montessori education to be important only at the preschool (Casa) level. However, the work of developing into fully formed, self-reliant, and responsible individuals continues beyond this period. Children at the elementary school level have a whole new set of needs that call for the continued sensitivity of the teacher.

From birth to age six, children are sensorial explorers, studying every aspect of their environment, language, and culture. From age six to twelve, children become reasoning explorers. They develop new powers of abstraction and imagination.
