More About our PROGRAMS
At MSK, our classrooms are multi-aged following the Montessori philosophy whereby the older children learn by helping the younger children and the younger children admire and learn to accomplish what the older children are working on.
Both the Casa and Elementary Classrooms at MSK follow a three year multi-age cycle. The Casa program houses children from 2½ to 6 years of age and the lower elementary classroom houses children 6 to 9 years of age. Respectfully, Upper Elementary will house children aged 9 to 12 years, thus grades or level 4, 5 and 6. The benefits to this method of teaching are endless. Primarily, the greatest benefit lies in the children remaining in the same classroom, ideally with the same teachers, and some of the same children for a three-year cycle.
Most psychologists agree that a large portion of a child’s intelligence and social characteristics are formed between 3 to 4 years of age. Maria Montessori also found that a child of early preschool age is sensitive to order, coordination, concentration and independence. Therefore, it is ideal to begin a child in a Montessori program between the ages of 3 to 4 years so that they can maximize their developmental sensitivities and intellectual needs. A strong foundation will then be built within the child where they will carry with them for all of their future learning and living endeavors.
At MSK we believe that consistency and routine help build a true solid foundation of Montessori knowledge. Therefore, we highly recommend that children that are between the ages of 2½ to 3½ should attend school for five mornings or afternoons a week as per rules set out by the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (please see enclosed pamphlet). Children that are 4 and 5 years of age should attend five full days a week. This decision ultimately depends on the needs of the child. It is also important to note that a child starting at 2½ may attend the Casa Program for 4 years depending on their birth date (for example: if your child is born December 31st, 2002 and turns 6 years in 2008, this child is eligible to enter grade 1. If a child’s birthday is after December 31st, 2002, they are not eligible to attend grade 1 in the upcoming scholastic year. This regulation is mandated under the Ministry of Education.)
