The Montessori School in Kleinburg (MSK) is excited to offer families a Toddler Program for children from age 18 to 30 months. This is a well-rounded learning opportunity that will springboard your child into their educational journey within a nurturing, enriching and scenic environment.
These are tender years for your child and MSK recognizes that. We are proud to offer a program that is gentle and caring while providing stimulating and academically-focused materials. MSK Toddler teachers are active and keep children engaged in projects and hands-on activities while forming important bonds with their students. This gives toddlers a strong sense of security and the confidence to challenge themselves and delve deeper into the classroom materials.
THE TODDLER CURRICULUM
The focus of MSK’s Toddler program is building upon the key developmental areas such as:
- Sensory development;
- Self-help skills;
- Physical development and motor skills; and
- Social and emotional growth.
Cultural lessons are intertwined in language curriculum. This would include learning about weather, calendar, sharing stories, specialty classes (i.e. French and Italian) and basic names of objects in the classroom (vocabulary enrichment) and in nature. Typically this is covered during morning and afternoon circles. Students are also given ample opportunity to learn about the world around them when taking part in outdoor play in our scenic playground.
THE TODDLER CLASSROOM
What sets a typical Montessori toddler classroom apart from traditional daycare is that you won’t find commercial and name-brand plastic toys strewn about. Everything is thoughtfully laid out to encourage learning and development.
When you first enter the Toddler classroom at MSK you will see an organized, welcoming and clean space. Large inviting windows give children views of the Humber River valley and forest where birds, squirrels and other forest friends come and visit while lots of natural sunlight pours in.
All furniture and equipment is tailored to little bodies and minds and carefully curated to cater to the particular needs of toddlers. Stimulating items (i.e. puzzles, bead stringing etc.) and activities are available throughout that work within the curriculum areas and develop a child’s personal skills by using practical life materials. We promote the “I’m a big kid” mentality and give toddlers challenges that enable them to succeed and grow. We often give toddlers small jobs and acknowledge them for helping. It is through this positivity that small children develop self-confidence to start their educational journey on the right foot and have a life-long love of learning.
THE TYPICAL TODDLER DAYEach day provides a balance of quiet and active growth-oriented activities, as well as time for eating, snacking, napping and outdoor play. Some activities take place in groups, while others are individual.
The Toddler classrooms are filled with busy workers. MSK teachers will use the energy of your child and direct it in a positive way for learning and discovery. We focus on accomplishments rather than failures and praise good behaviour, encouraging children to make good choices even at such a young age; again, building confidence and self-awareness. Teachers play a large role by encouraging guided learning and exploring to truly allow the toddlers to “help them do it by themselves”. Materials are rotated on a regular basis to allow children to master a skill and move on to more challenging ones.
